It's been close to 3 weeks since Logan had tubes put in his ears to help his hearing loss and his speech and communication impairment. Since then we have seen quite a bit of improvement in him.
I cannot flat out say that he now easily communicates with us because he does not. However, we have noticed that he does attempt to imitate sounds more and does seem to hear us better when we speak to him. He has taken on a I will show you what I want approach to communicating with us, so I have been considering American Sign Language for him.
I'm not 100% decided on if I will teach him or not, but one of the benefits from it is that with sign language he won't have to cry or scream to communicate his needs. He picks up on sounds a lot and shows to be understanding when we say things like "clap your hands" or "stomp your feet", he just isn't very verbal.
Yesterday night he did say "monkey" which made me so proud. I am absolutely dying to hear his little voice call "mama" or say "I love you". He doesn't know what "monkey" is, or what "papa" is. I have been working with him to show him that his "papa" is daddy. Somedays he understands others he doesn't. He says "uh oh" in the appropriate situations and "this" when we ask what do you want. An example being, if we open the fridge and ask "Logy what do you want?" He'll point and say "this".
Food and big groups of people are still a problem for him. He is still being picky about textures and sticking to the same thing, and he still screams in situations like the store or church and isolates himself as well. The other day a friend came over and while everyone else was talking in the living room, Logan was in a corner of my bedroom by himself. We took him to the church's "day care" today and although they said he played well and participated. I found him sitting on chair alone. He just didn't seem to notice all the kids surrounding him.
There are days when I feel like this is all on me. That I have made my son this way. I question what I did wrong. What could I have done differently. We're still waiting on a speech therapy appointment, and his post op for a follow up hearing test is the 7th. He did have an ear infection about a week ago and my biggest concern right now is him possibly needing hearing aids. I'm concerned because I don't know how he'll react since he's so sensitive to things, but at the same time if it will make a difference...I'm all for it.
